Teen Sleep Matters

68% of teens do not sleep enough during school nights

Sleep should be an important part of your student’s overall health and wellbeing.

These resources can be used with Key Stage 3 or 4 and tackle the reasons why young people don’t sleep well, the impact of sleep deprivation and encourages students to think about the small changes they could make to sleep
better.

The Teen Sleep Hub has been kindly funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and Coronavirus Mental Health Response Fund (administered by the charity, Mind, in partnership with the Mental Health Consortia) who understand how important sleep is for good mental health.

“We know that good sleep is a fundamental building block for young people’s mental and physical health. But our research has shown that many young people are struggling with their sleep and that it is having a negative effect on their mental health. We know that significant numbers of teenagers are not getting the sleep they need in a typical week and are too tired to do schoolwork or study or concentrate in class. That is why a resource like this is so important.”

Sleep Champion

The Sleep Charity, provider of the Teen Sleep Hub, offer courses to further the knowledge of those working with young people.

Research shows that sleep patterns alter during puberty meaning youngsters often don’t fall asleep until much later at night. This can result in difficulties waking in the morning and sleep deprivation impacting on their education.

This course outlines the reasons for the sleep issues, practical strategies to support youngsters to improve their sleep and useful resources to start conversations with young people and be able to share with them and parents/carers. Schools interested in improving attendance and attainment will benefit from having a Sleep Champion amongst their team.
